  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3-4 drops red food coloring

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. Set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in buttermilk, cocoa powder, red food coloring, and vanilla extract.

4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans.

5. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

6. To make the frosting, beat together butter and shortening until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until smooth. Beat in milk, vanilla, and food coloring. Spread frosting over cooled cakes.
