    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • For the Frosting:
    • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
    • 4 cups confectioners' sugar
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • For the Glaze:
    • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 tablespoon corn syrup

Instructions

Making the Cake

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla and beat until blended. Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Beat until blended.

Divide the batter evenly between the three prepared pans. Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top of the batter in each pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the Frosting

In a large bowl, beat the butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating until blended. Add the vanilla and cream and beat until the frosting is light and fluffy.

Assembling the Cake

Place one layer of the cake on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of frosting over the top. Place the second layer of the cake on top of the frosting and spread with another layer of frosting. Place the last layer of cake on top. Frost the outside of the cake with the remaining frosting.

Making the Glaze

In a small saucepan, melt the chocolate chips, butter, and corn syrup over low heat. Stir until smooth and spread over the top of the cake. Let the glaze set before serving.
